I have some Dog Travel Tips which might be usefull when you travel together with your Dog. I know that often things are forgotten. Everyone is happy to have vacation or a few days off. I am not a veterinarian, just a Dog. Keep that in mind.

Assess your Dog well.

Look always good to your dog’s travel possibilities. If your dog is very young or old, or is ill, pregnant, or recovering from surgery, it may be better for you and your dog to look for a pet sitter or place to stay. If your dog has not traveled before, try a short overnight or weekend trip first. You never know how your Dog behaves at strange places.

Make an appointement with your veterinarian.

Inform your veterinarian where you will be traveling to. Give him some travel details and ask him about any flea, heartworm, or tick risks for areas you will be traveling to. Try to be smart and preventive. You can better ask your veterinarian about appropriate medications or treatments before your Dog becomes carsick or restless. Your veterinarian could give you some extra Good Advice. There are always thing you have not thought about.

Dogs often wear no collar when they are recovered at shelters after become separated. Consider having your Doggie chipped. They use scanners that will read these chips. Microchips for Dogs are common. Your veterinarian can tell you more about this procedure.

Be sure that all vaccinations are up to date and get current health and rabies certificates no more than ten (10) days prior to your departure. This is generally required and many kennels will not accept dogs without the correct documents. Emergency medical care could go faster without the potentially dangerous duplication of vaccinations.

Give your Dog a name.

Secure lables, collars or tags with your dog’s name and your name, address, and phone number or email at a place people easily could find. It has to be strong. Some Dogs get rid of everything.

Always verify that your dog’s tags are current.

Things to arrange:

- Food (very important),
- Some bottles with water (dont fool with water, enough please),
- Fresh Air and Toilet Stops / occasions,
- A reliable leash,
- An extra collar,
- Blanket or sheet,
- Bedding (if he is used to),
- Toys (In case he gets bored),
- All required medications, supplements, and preventatives,
- Brush or comb,
- Waste removal bags,
- First aid kit.

Make a plan before you leave. Find good lodging. Your Dog has to be welcome too.

Always keep fresh water available for your Dog and don’t fool with his food. Try to keep the same food or give the Dog some time to test a new brand.

When you travel by car your Dog is safest in the back seat. Use either a special harness for your Dog that hooks on to a seat belt, a Doggie car seat that elevates your Dog so he or she can watch out the window, or a leash that attaches to the seat belt. Give your Dog enough Fresh Air and don’t let him burn in the sun.
