Ever come into the garden and seen your dog consuming record amounts of foliage? It's a fairly odd habit (after all, you own Rex the dog, not Bessie the cow), but they seem to absolutely love the stuff, and there seems to be very few ways to discourage them from eating it! But what's their motivation?

We wrote this article to give you a better idea of why dogs are compelled to chow down on the green stuff, and how to ensure that they don't have to do so any more. Afterwards, you can sit comfortably and enjoy your garden or head inside to play some Partypoker, minus the paranoia that comes with seeing your furry friend play lawnmower.

Why Do Dogs Eat Grass? Almost every Dog eats grass once in a while. I have to admit, I like it too. Doggies are natural carnivores but like to eat grass for several reasons:

- Normal Behavior: They simply like it, but also need it in their Diets from time to time. (Wild Canines like wolves, eat all of an animal when they catch it. Mostly Herbivores, plant eating animals with a lot of plants and grass in their intestines. It was once part of a Dogs normal Diet.);

- To promote vomiting: If your Doggie has an upset stomach or feels himself sick he / she eats grass which binds the material, gets irritating, and causes vomiting to get rid of the bad stuff;

- To aid digestion;

- To check his / her territory for marks of other pets by tasting or licking the grass without actually eating it.

If your Doggie eats grass occasionally, it's just normal Dog Behavior. If they eat grass on a regular basis , dietary imbalance could be the problem. Try to change your Doggies Diet. Give a higher quality of Food. (Better digestion performance and with enough greens in it. Some people even give extra vegetables like Broccoli or green beans). If your Dog starts to eat grass frequently, make an appointment with your Veterinarian: Your Doggie could suffer from an infection or illness.
